The Best ‘Bromances’ of F1 today

Formula One’s focus has always been and always will be racing, but in the age of social media the racing series has now had to branch out its focus to entertain its audience when races end. F1 today has become almost a show where they must entertain their fans in some way between races to keep their loyal fan base. A way F1 does this is letting us see into the lives and the personalities of the drivers on the grid.  Being an F1 driver in this digital era means letting the public see a lot more of your daily life than F1 drivers before you would have shown. Although there are some exceptions such as Sebastian Vettel who chooses not to own any form of social media or reveal much of his private life, F1 drivers have become part of the “after-race entertainment” for the fans.

For us fans, one of the most exciting thing we can see from drivers is the bonds they form with other drivers on the grid. Whether its driver pairings or just friendships between drivers on different teams, these ‘bromances’ form and bring us fans exciting entertainment other than racing.

Here are some of our favourite ‘bromances’ between drivers on the grid…

Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel

Although we have seen it less in the 2019/2020 season due to the pair now being in separate teams, this ‘bromance’ is one that must be spoken about. This friendship, from what the fans could see, was very chilled (Obviously.. the Iceman is involved!!). The pair, after spending some time together, can be observed as having a mutual understanding of what the other one is like and have nothing but respect for one another. We hope this (although very subtle) wholesome friendship will last long after the two drivers F1 days come to an end.

Daniel Ricciardo and Charles Leclerc

This pairing may be a shock to some of you as we have only got a very small glimpse into this ‘bromance’, however, it seems to be one the provides much entertainment to the fans of F1. Both drivers have been seen to post funny videos of each other and their goofing around (specifically on planes lol) and appear to have a fun time together on and off the grid with taking a trip to Las Vegas together last year.  The two have also show their respect for each other as drivers when they swapped helmets (one of the biggest signs of respect as an F1 driver) at the end of the 2019 season. We have a feeling there is much more ‘bromance’ to come from these two in the future.

Carlos Sainz Jr and Lando Norris

Well, well, well… We couldn’t do a “bromance” post without including these two!? This driver pairing may have only started last year but this ‘bromance’ is one of our favourites and has brought us fans SO much joy. The friendship between Carlos and Lando is strong and the fans love it. With the two featuring alongside each other in several McLaren YouTube videos we see just how funny and close the two of them are. They both have the utmost respect for each other, a great example of this is when Carlos achieved his first podium in Brazil and Lando gave nothing but praise to his teammate and showed his happiness for him. The two interact a lot on social media often creating memes of each other or posting videos of the two joking around. Their friendship has most definitely gained McLaren a new wave of fans and we do not think the buzz around these two will fade anytime soon; even when Carlos moving to Ferrari in the 2021 season. Carlos even gave Lando ‘his muppet friend’ a special shout out in his “Thank You” video when his seat at Ferrari was confirmed – yes, we cried real tears.

Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen

We love these two. When together they are always making us laugh with their constant jokes, sarcasm, playfighting or just their general ‘bromance’. Even though the pair are not racing for the same team they still have an awesome friendship and bond. These two also show each other a lot of respect, Daniel and Max actually swapped helmets at the end of the 2019 season too (Dan is a busy guy huh?!). Any video of the two together brings smiles to peoples faces, their energy together and friendship is infectious.  Its great to see even after Dan leaving RedBull the two are frequently seen together in the paddock, the media pen and outside of F1. So, obviously we had to include them, even if they had a few battles on track; what brothers don’t have a scuffle now and then?

As the 2020 season is still yet to commence, it is putting a hold on us fans getting to see our fave pairs. However, we look forward to things getting back to normal, and also look forward to the 2021 season when some team changes will result in new driver pairings (especially Lando and Daniel – SCREAMS INTERNALLY)!!
