Carlos Signs to Ferrari
Carlos Sainz, driver for McLaren and recent podium sitter in Monza, has been questioned frequently on whether he believes his move to Ferrari for 2021 is the right choice? While the Spanish driver has stated that he has no regrets when it comes to his Ferrari move, we can help but wonder about the possible success he could be leaving behind at the end of this year…
After being left without a seat for 2019, due to Renault signing Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz was on the search for a new team. Carlos signed to McLaren, who at the time, had gained the reputation of being a struggling team. In the past 2 years the team of McLaren have completely turned around even gaining 3 podiums in the last two years! This improvement in the team has been due to the great partnership of Carlos and Lando, the two drivers of McLaren, constantly working together with their team to solve not only the problems with the car but also the problem of McLaren’s damaged reputation. Their constant investment into the teams workings have helped McLaren work their way back up the ranks in just under two years!
This extreme improvement in McLaren’s performance has led them to sign with Mercedes to use their engines from 2021 onwards. This deal could be a huge success for McLaren as we have seen teams such as Racing Point who in the past year have come on leaps and bounds due to also carrying Mercedes engines. This possibility of the same improvement happening to McLaren could leave Carlos Sainz regretting his decision to move on from a team who could be reaching the steps of the podium more frequently next year…
Sainz’s future team, Ferrari, have spent most of their 2020 season falling down the grid. Mattia Binotto, the Team Principle of Ferrari admitted that it may take years untill we see Ferrari back on the top spot in Formula 1. Despite this, Sainz has stated that he is “very comfortable” with his decision to sign with the team for two years (and the possibility of more in the future).
Binotto has stated he hopes that Sainz and Leclerc will be “long cycle” members of the Ferrari team. Both drivers are set to have much more involvement in the development of the car, both hoping to be based in Maranello near the headquarters of the team. Sainz on their team, who has already had the experience of helping build a team back up from the bottom of the grid, it is no wonder why Ferrari hope to keep Carlos for the long-run during their fight back to the top.
While it may take time to see Ferrari back to its winning ways and the years ahead being very challenging, Carlos does not seem to be worried. The 26 year-old has been able to achieve something like this before and this may be why he is so comfortable to do it again.
“There is never a bad time to go to Ferrari” - Carlos Sainz.
